Following in the footsteps of freshman safety Jordan Haden, who was granted a full release with no transfer exceptions by head coach Urban Meyer on on Aug. 16, wide receiver Adrian Coxson has also decided to leave the Florida Gators.

Citing home sickness as his chief reason, Coxson’s transfer has been agreed to by the University of Florida; he will be released from his scholarship effective immediately.

Early Thursday, freshman safety Matt Elam wrote the following innocuous message on his Twitter account: “I hate to see young men my age run away from something because it’s hard. Just destroying our class.”

A highly-rated four-star recruit from Maryland (like Haden) Coxson’s name had not been heard much in fall practice. The Gators signed four other WRs in their 2010 recruiting class including Chris Dunkley, Quinton Dunbar, Solomon Patton and Robert Clark and already have two-to-four committed for 2011 (depending on position choice).

UPDATE: Coxson will be transferring to Maryland, according to numerous media outlets.

Reports from the practice field are that Freshman DB Jordan Haden has asked for-and been granted a release from his football scholarship. The 6? 200 lb defensive back and brother of former UF starter and current Cleveland Browns player Joe Haden, did not show up for practice yesterday.  Will Hill was quoted as saying that he did not know where Haden was, but that he “had not seen him on the practice field in a few days.”

Calls were placed to the UF athletic offices and a collective “no comment” was issued by the staff.  More updates to come as Gatorsportsnation stays on top of this developing story….

UPDATE #1 – 2:45pm -Gatorsportsnation was just advised that there will be no restrictions on the release.  Haden is free to transfer to any school that will accept him as a transfer.

This Friday (August 13) I had the opportunity to join a phone conference with T.I while he answered questions on his new role in the movie "Takers". The conference call consisted of one student from each major university in Florida. I was selected to represent Florida Memorial University and www.24hourhiphop.com as well. The conference call allowed the students to talk directly to T.I and ask their questions directly. Check out below for the inside scoop from the "Uncaged King", T.I, himself!

Question: Was it an easy transition for you to go from being a rapper to an actor?

T.I: Hmm well I agree and I disagree. Music is all of your thoughts, your opinions, your views, based on your person. In music the words are coming from your situation. Where as with film its the views of the story teller, the writer. So your used as an instrument, but in music you play the instrument.

Question: Where or from whom did you draw inspiration from for this role? Or any of your roles so far ?

T.I: I was blessed because in my first roles I got to work alongside two of the best actors in the game. My first role "ATL" was produced by Will Smith and I really  got to learn the ropes from one of the biggest box office sellers in the world. Then "American Gangster", I got to share the screen and pick the brain of one of the greatest black actors ever, Denzel Washington...

Question: This movie "Takers" and "American Gangster" seem to focus on illicit activities, what is it that you want your audiance to get from this as a whole?

T.I: First of all I would like for the seperation to be made from art and life, fact and fiction, from reality and entertainment. Now I dont think I should be held anymore accountable to the chracters that I play, like in "American Gangster", or like Ghost in "Takers". I shouldnt be more accountable than Arnold Schwarzenegger should be held for him playing "Terminator" or him playing "Commando" or any other actor. No one questions their intentions no one questions their values because they play gangster. No one questions Pachino's values for playing "Scarface", no one questions Di Nero for his role in "Goodfellas". No one makes it any different. I am an actor. I'm really just being used to tell a story and convey a message, a message of the writer of the script, message of the director. This is not T.I or Clifford Harris message. I'm just accurately displaying what the story calls for. I'm taking whats on the script and putting it on the screen.

Question: Earlier you said you want to learn from actors like Denzel Washington and would like to be like them eventually. Does your joy lie in music still or are you hoping to shift more into film?

T.I: I believe the answer to that question is yes and still yes.Music is my first love and I am very passionate about it. Film is something that is new, and fresh, and exciting to me. You know right now music is over saturated, you know what I'm saying? The music industry is so over saturated. When I first decided I wanted to be a rapper, if you were to make it and become a rapper and get a video and a record deal, and go platinum or go gold, man you were soemthing special. You were a cut above the rest. Let alone get a video playing on MTV. Let alone manage to do shows and go touring. Let alone going gold. But now a days if you tell somebody your a rapper (yea I know everybody a rapper), well my video coming on tv (yea but everybody video come on tv). There is no exclusivity to the artistry anymore. You know what I'm saying? It's like it's been diluted and over saturated so much that if you want to be special you have to find another way to be special. You got to step outside of this and do something else. You know I will still do it because I love to do it but a side of me still yearns for that exclusivity and to be on that narrow. Part of me saying I gotta do something else too. Everybody can't just hop into a box office smasher and earn 20K the first weekend. Everybody can't do that.

Question: You mentioned how complex of a character that Ghost is, what do you like most about Ghost?

T.I: I like his ambition. I like the fact that Ghost refuses to take no for an answer. I gotta pick my words carefully, I dont want to give the movie away too much. I like the way Ghost is trying to help himself in everyway. Everything that he has done, he is looking to do better. Now there are some questionable chracteristics about Ghost but I think that it should also be taken into consideration that it may have been what he had to do. I can also say I like Ghost loyalty. Ghost was above all loyal to people who he felt weren't always loyal to him in return. Now, I mean do I like the decisions Ghost chose to make? No I dont but I think I can say with a clear conscience I dont know what kind of mind frame I would be in if I had been put in the same circumstances as Ghost. I dont believe I wouldve made the same decisions as he did but I do believe I would definitely have an adverse opinion.

Question: There are a lot of action scenes in the film. Were you able to be involved in many of them?

T.I: Not many of them. I had maybe two. You know the director and the studio, you know they made sure that I knew that Ghost involvment was more of an emotional contribution. Emotional, mental, comical contribution. You know not the physical, Ghost character, he meant so much. He is the driving force to the story. He is the character that dictates the pace of the film. If he had as much physical contribution to the film as everyone else he would be an off set of attention. He would be overshadowing a lot of the other characters at that point.

Question: I think it's pretty obvious that 2009 you and your "Takers" co star Chris Brown had a rough year. I was listening to you earlier and I agree that people should differentiate between the artist and the art. Having said that, do you think the movie will shed a different light, sort of a modern day mythological hero type light on the two of your for 2010, or does the movie contribute to a bad boy image to the public?

T.I: Well I really dont know. I believe the public perception is what they feel. No more would I think if I were to do a role in "The Great Debators" would it no more help my image as a college student. Your going to think about that person whatever you choose to think about that person. I dont think if Chris was to come out tomorrow with a romantic comedy and sweep a woman off of her feet with a "Pretty Woman" type of feel, it still would not take away all what people think and believe about him if that is what they CHOOSE to think and believe about him.

Question: On Larry King Live, you mentioned that you were somewhat an honor roll student. If you were to obtain a degree today, away from the music and acting, what could you see yourself doing?

Question: There's a lot of buzz about your statement about wanting to win an oscar by age 40. I was wondering what was your strategy for that and do you feel like you need validation from the academy and critics?

T.I: I heard that statement regurgitated so many times, and I believe it waas taken out of context. My point was I rather be a full time actor at 40, than a full time rapper. I rather win Oscars at the age of 40, than still trying to win Grammys. Now I would like to win an Oscar by 35 if possible! You know what I'm saying? But I am not trying to rush the process, and validation from the critics, I mean its wonderful to be acclaimed for your art and your passion but at the end of the day I am more concerned about the public and how the public sees my work. Those are the people who are working hard and parting with their dollars and cents to be entertained by me. So I'm more concerned with their perception and their opinion of my work than the critics. I am passionate about what I do and whatever it is that is given to the best, then I want that. Whether it is fashion, film, endorsement deals , whatever it is, whatever it may be, whatever they give out to the best in the business then I want some of those.

Question: What was the most memorable moment you had while filming the movie "Takers"?

T.I: The most memorable moment ? Hmm let me think. The whole experience as a whole was phenomenal. Just the camaraderie, it was really like just showing up and hanging out, we just happened to shoot a movie in the process. Everybody got along well, everybody brought a different swag to the screen. It was just an outstanding experience on all levels. I can tell you my least favorite moment, it was when they had me in that cop suit. It was hot, it was tight, and it seemed like the scene went on forever. It had to be one of the hottest days in California history!

*Get Copy of 2010-11 Schedule

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — After leading the University of North Florida men’s basketball team to one of the best season turnarounds in program history, second-year head coach Matthew Driscoll has put together an extremely challenging schedule for the 2010-11 season that includes 13 games at home in UNF Arena.

The Ospreys pre-conference schedule is highlighted by games against teams from several high major conferences including the ACC (Florida State, Maryland), Big East (Pittsburgh), Big Ten (Purdue) and Big XII (Missouri, Texas, Kansas State) conferences. The ’10-11 ledger also features participation in a Thanksgiving holiday tournament played in Cancun, Mexico.

“Our 2010-11 schedule presents our team with some exciting opportunities,” said Driscoll. “We have the chance to battle some of the top high-major programs in the country including three teams that are consensus Top 10 squads (Purdue, Kansas State, Pittsburgh) in the preseason discussions. This makes for great exposure for our program as well as an exciting opportunity to play against some quality opponents. The schedule is very challenging as we will play 10 teams that posted 20 or more victories last year and participated in postseason play including nine NCAA Tournament participants. We hope that all of these competitive games have us prepared to play our best basketball during conference play and in March.”

The season opens Nov. 4 with an exhibition game against fellow Jacksonville program Edward Waters. Driscoll then sends his troops through a six-game road swing culminating with participation in the Cancun Challenge. UNF opens the stretch Nov. 12 at Florida State before travelling to Pittsburgh for a homecoming of sorts for Driscoll, a native of the Steel City, on Nov. 13.

The Ospreys play at Wyoming (Nov. 18) and Missouri (Nov. 20) in opening round games of the unique Cancun Classic. Tournament action concludes with a pair of games Nov. 23-24 in Cancun as UNF battles Prairie View A&M before taking on either Western Illinois or Morgan State, an NCAA Tournament participant in 2010.

“Playing in the Cancun Challenge is a great opportunity for our program,” Driscoll added. “We have a chance to face two high-major foes but also play a pair of mid-major opponents with a chance to earn another tournament championship. It also allows us to expose our guys to different parts of the country as well as the world with two games in Cancun.”

Following their brief Caribbean holiday, North Florida returns homes for its true home and Atlantic Sun Conference opener Dec. 2 against Florida Gulf Coast. The Ospreys also host A-Sun foe Stetson (Dec. 4) before hitting the road for a pair of road tilts against NCAA Tourney teams Purdue (Dec. 11) and Texas (Dec. 14). UNF hosts Furman Dec. 18 and Palm Beach Atlantic in an exhibition game Dec. 20 before heading home for the Christmas holiday.

After a short holiday break, UNF concludes the 2010 calendar year with contests at Maryland (Dec. 29) and Kansas State (Dec. 31).

The Ospreys ring in the New Year with three consecutive A-Sun road games versus Campbell (Jan. 5), Belmont (Jan. 8) and Lipscomb (Jan. 10). UNF’s first home contest of 2011 comes Jan. 13 against defending conference champion ETSU followed by a Jan. 15 tilt with USC Upstate at UNF Arena. North Florida visits Kennesaw State (Jan. 20) and Mercer (Jan. 22) before renewing the annual River City Rumble rivalry with cross-town foe Jacksonville on Jan. 26. The JU game marks the start of a four-game home stand for the Ospreys including contests against Campbell (Jan. 29), Lipscomb (Feb. 3) and Belmont (Feb. 5).

The regular season closes with the Ospreys playing five of their final seven games on the road. North Florida plays the River City Rumble rematch at JU Feb. 8 followed by contests at Upstate (Feb. 11) and ETSU (Feb. 13). UNF’s final home appearances come Feb. 18 and 20 versus Mercer and Kennesaw, respectively. Games at in-state foes Stetson (Feb. 24) and FGCU (Feb. 26) mark the conclusion of the regular season.

The 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship is set for Mar. 2-5 in Macon. Ga.

“It should be another competitive season in the A-Sun this year,” said Driscoll. “Three of the league’s best teams return most of their rosters making it a very top heavy conference again. This provides us a great challenge to look forward to as we look to continue building this program.”

North Florida posted 13 victories last season marking a five-game improvement from the previous year. The Ospreys return four of five starters from last year’s squad including three of the top four scorers, the top two rebounders and the team’s assist leader. UNF also welcomes a talented newcomer class featuring freshmen, transfers and junior college products.

Season ticket information is available by contacting the UNF Athletic Ticket Office at (904) 620-BIRD (2473) or via e-mail: Ospreytickets@unf.edu.

UF compares favorably in minority graduation rates

by Nathan Crabbe

A pair of new reports find most colleges and universities do a poor job of graduating minority students, but the University of Florida is an exception.

The Education Trust released the reports today, which show that national college graduation rates differ greatly for white and minority students. About 60 percent of white students earn bachelor’s degrees within six years, but the figure is only 49 percent for Hispanic students and 40 percent for black students.

UF’s record is much better. Its six-year graduation rate is 83 percent for white students and only slightly lower, 81 percent, for Latino students. Both figures lead the state university system. UF’s graduation rate is 73 percent for black students, which lags just behind the state leader, Florida State University, which reports a 74 percent rate.

Overall, the state of Florida ranked fifth in the nation with a nearly 51 percent graduation rate for black students and sixth with a 57 percent rate for Hispanic students.

UF compares favorably in minority graduation rates – The ...

Without Tebow, Florida’s running game will be considerably different this fall. But with all the talent in the backfield, it also remains the team’s biggest strength.

“We’ve got an interesting dynamic back there to really cause some stress,” offensive coordinator Steve Addazio said Friday.

It starts with Jeff Demps, the junior who just might be the fastest guy in college. Demps captured track national championships this year in the 60-meter dash and the 100 meters. He became the first person in school history to win titles in two sports.

He’s open to the possibility of trying to make the U.S. team for the 2012 Olympics in London, but his focus remains on the Gators.

“At the end of the day, I’m still a football player,” Demps said.

Demps has rushed for 1,350 yards and 14 touchdowns the last two seasons. He averages 7.6 yards a carry, putting him on pace to shatter the school record (6.4 yards per carry) set by Eli Williams (1994-97).

He should get more chances, especially in short-yardage and goal-line plays.

“It’s exciting just to give us a chance to get that feeling at crunch time, putting the running backs in and see what we’re going to do,” Demps said.

Demps certainly will share the workload.

Emmanuel Moody, a 212-pound senior who transferred from Southern California in 2007, believes he’s healthy after having two ankle surgeries since January. Moody has carried 58 times in each of the last two seasons, both of them plagued by nagging injuries.

His right ankle has been the biggest issue. Moody injured his ankle last November, returned the following month and then developed bone spurs. He had surgery to remove them earlier this year, returned too soon, developed more bone spurs and went back under the knife.

“It’s getting there,” said Moody, who has missed nine games because of ankle problems. “I should be ready to go before the first game starts. I’m practicing, I’m going all out. I went through all the workouts. But I don’t how it’s going to be with pads on.”

If Moody misses any time this fall, it could open the door for sophomore Mike Gillislee and highly touted freshman Mack Brown.

Gillislee averaged 8.6 yards per carry in mop-up duty last season and ended the season with a 52-yard run in the Sugar Bowl against Cincinnati. Brown joined the mix a few weeks ago and could make an immediate impact. He gained more than 1,700 yards in his final two years at King High in Lithonia, Ga.

Adding to Florida’s backfield depth are speedsters Chris Rainey and Andre Debose, two hybrid playmakers expected to be used like coach Urban Meyer did Percy Harvin two years ago.

Rainey has 1,237 yards rushing, including several long ones, and nine TDs. Debose was the team’s top recruit in 2009, but missed the entire season after having surgery to repair a torn hamstring.

“You can’t win our conference if you can’t run the ball,” Addazio said. “You better be tough, you better be able to run it and you better have balance. If you don’t have those three components, you’ve got problems.”
