But Duva's got you fooled.

His memories are of his four-year run as an outfielder at the University of Florida and his seven-year stint in the minors before calling it quits. He jokingly describes his minor league career as living the dream without making money.

The 37-year-old from Gainesville gushes over starting as a freshman in the College World Series for the Gators in 1991. He remembers Rosenblatt Stadium dwarfing him as he drifted around what seemed like a gigantic centerfield, as LSU eliminated a Gator team that still holds the school record for most wins in a season with 51.

He cherishes the time he hit a career-best .367 as the leadoff man for the Winnipeg Goldeyes, a Cleveland Indians farm team, in the Independent Northern League in 1998 to earn the league batting title.

"That is by far my greatest professional moment," Duva said.

Heck, in the minors he played against Darryl Strawberry and sent five-time All-Star pitcher and World Series champion Jack Morris out of a game with a line drive to his leg.

Duva's pro career ended in 2000 and he left the game to pursue a career in law. He received his J.D. from the Georgia State University College of Law in 2002 with honors in litigation and became an associate attorney. Five years later, he made partner at Mozley, Finlayson & Loggins LLP in Atlanta and in 2007 and 2009 was recognized in the Super Lawyer's edition of Atlanta Magazine as a "Rising Star" and one of the "Top Young Lawyers in Georgia."

"When you play ball for as long as I did and you don't get as far as you want, to have something like that to fall back on has been fantastic," Duva said.

Duva is still a partner at the same firm and "loves" the life he's made for himself. Mainly, he enjoys the perk of having the honor to help clients wade through the unfavorable moments, making sure he can bring stability to people's lives.

"The nice thing is we've kind of tried to be a source that people can lean on to navigate through difficult times, either through the corporate context or personally," he said.

Duva envisioned becoming a lawyer while at Florida, where he had a .285 career batting average, made the All-SEC Tournament team in 1991, was a three-time Academic All-SEC (1992-94) and is the all-time leader in triples (21).

He was drafted in the 29th round by the Indians in 1994, but knew his future resided outside of baseball. During his seven-year career, which he said was longer than intended, his wife Ingrid, whom he met at Florida, worked and paid the bills while he "fooled around in the minors."

They are now raising two children — son Andrew, 6, and daughter Elena, 4 — with a third one on the way.

Living in Atlanta, Duva still finds himself immersed in Gator athletics, especially with the recent success of Florida's football team. He's caught a few baseball games and made it to Gainesville in April for the LSU series, in which the Gators swept the defending champs.

"I try to keep up with it as much as possible," he said. "I grew up watching Gator baseball, and I try to keep up with it through the alumni activities and all the fun stuff.

"I'm really impressed with the talent they've been able to assemble, but also what the coaches have been able to do with young talent in SEC play and now in national play."

1 » Former Florida Gators center/guard Maurkice Pouncey is on the verge of signing his rookie contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers and has been making sure to keep in shape so he is fit and ready to participate in training camp beginning this weekend. However, allegations that Pouncey received $100,000 from a runner for an agent while at the University of Florida put him off schedule a bit recently, something his speed and conditioning coach Tom Shaw noticed. “He’s disappointed that this stuff has come up and thrown a wrench in. That’s the reason why he missed [workouts],” Shaw told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review last Wednesday. “He’s gotten to a point where he’s trying to make sure he still has his [good] name. He wants to be able to go back to the University of Florida and still be respected.” Nevertheless, Pouncey is ready to go; now he just has to sign his contract and put the rest behind him.

2 » Florida transfer guard Mike Rosario, who will be eligible to play for the team during the 2011-12 season after sitting out a year due to NCAA rules, spoke with SNY’s Adam Zagoria Wednesday about watching two of the nation’s top recruits – five-star Gators commit Brad Beal and five-star recruit Austin Rivers – play in the AAU U-17 Super Showdown on Tuesday. “I watched them go head-to-head,” he said. “It was a great matchup. Those guys [have] been playing well. I love Brad Beal’s game. He has a smooth game like Ray Allen. I love the fact that Austin Rivers can shoot the ball, put it on the floor. Both of those guys are capable of helping us win a conference championship. I hope they both come here so we can turn this program into a special program.” Rosario also noted that the biggest adjustment he has had to make since stepping on campus is dealing with the heat. “You walk out of the dorm room, it’s just a sauna,” he noted.

Extra BIT » The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Florida has offered a scholarship to 2012 guard/forward recruit Jarmal Reid. “That Florida offer really excited me,” Reid told the paper. “I like the whole atmosphere there. They have great fans and one of the best coaches around in Billy Donovan. I would love to be coached by him.”

UF law grad proposes reforms for sports agents

by Nathan Crabbe

The University of Florida doesn’t have a sports law program, but that hasn’t stopped Darren Heitner from focusing on the subject.

I wrote today’s column on Heitner, who earned a law degree from UF in the spring. He also attended UF as an undergraduate while starting a sports agency and blogging about the business.

“I’m a proud double Gator,” he said.

The blog has provided commentary on the recent allegations that agents are paying student-athletes. Heitner said the controversy has also led to questions about an article that he wrote on the legal responsibilities of agents that was published in the Dartmouth Law Journal.

The article calls for a federal registration system for agents. Currently they’re licensed in individual states. At the very least, Heitner said the system would eliminate paperwork and the cost of getting licenses in each state. He said he paid $1,300 to be licensed in Florida, plus $400 every other year.

Comments

  1. I believe there should be federal guidlines for sports agents. Players may play for teams all over the country during their working life. There is so much unethical dealings going on it should be regulated by one agency.

  2. The player should also be punished. They are taught to say no so they need to pay the penalty. I wonder if anyone ever thought of having the IRS investigate the money as unreported income. The schools should have not have pay the highest price for a player that is no longer even at the school.

The 2010 SEC Pre-Season Coaches Poll has been released and ten, count ‘em, ten Gators are represented. Of the ten selected to the team, three are on the first team, while the other seven clutter up the second team.

For a revamped roster full of young and mostly unproven talent, ten selections could be called a surprise.

With the exception of punter Chas Henry who should have been a no-brainer, the three young men who represent the Orange and Blue on the fist team, there is no real surprise there. Senior offensive linemen Mike Pouncey and Carl Johnson are expected to provide dominant blocking for John Brantley and the stable of running backs that make up the offensive backfield were selected to the first team along with ball hawking safety Janoris Jenkins. Urban Meyer and the defensive coaching staff will rely on Jenkins to also provide veteran leadership to the young but talented defensive backfield along with firing up the team with big plays.

Henry did make the second team, though, along with fellow kicker Caleb Sturgis. Flashy running back Jeff Demps, punishing linebacker A.J. Jones, defensive backs Ahmad Black and Will Hill were also selected to the second team. Also on the second team is Chris Rainey, who didn’t make the team at his new wide receiver position, but he did make the team as a special teams all purpose player.

The SEC Coaches Poll is voted on by all twelve SEC head coaches before the season. The coaches will re-convene after the season to do it again.
